Joshua Bassett first rose to prominence via his leading performance in the Disney+ production High School Musical: The Musical - The Series, an achievement that aligned with his major-label entry in 2020. The gentle acoustic number "Common Sense" preceded his self-titled debut EP, Joshua Bassett, which surfaced in 2021. A pair of further EPs followed during the next twelve months, among them Sad Songs in a Hotel Room in 2022. Early 2023 brought the uplifting single "Just Love."

A native of Oceanside, California, Bassett acquired skills on piano, guitar, and drums in his youth and entered musical theater at age eight through a community staging of High School Musical. After appearing in commercials, he obtained guest roles on series such as Lethal Weapon and Game Shakers while still in his mid-teens, securing his first recurring part in 2018 as Aidan Peters on the Disney Channel show Stuck in the Middle. A 2019 appearance on Grey's Anatomy occurred the same year he joined the original cast of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series in the central role of Ricky Bowen.

Bassett signed with Warner Records in early 2020, issuing his debut single "Common Sense" that April and earning a nomination for Favorite Male TV Star at the subsequent Kids' Choice Awards. The self-titled EP arrived in March 2021 and featured the tracks "Lie Lie Lie" and "Only a Matter of Time." A second EP released later that year examined the aftermath of his breakup with fellow pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo and contained the singles "Crisis," "Secret," and "Set Me Free." Led by "Smoke Slow," his third EP, Sad Songs in a Hotel Room, emerged in September 2022 and was followed by the standalone ballad "Would You Leave Me Now?" The 2023 release "Just Love" centered on themes of acceptance and self-worth.
