Biography
Evil Nine, the Brighton, England-based DJ and production duo of Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy, emerged in 1998 and quickly aligned with Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade imprint after submitting a demo tape through mutual acquaintance Jemma Griffiths, also known as Jem. Drawing on hip-hop, punk, electro, dancehall, post-punk, garage rock, techno, and Krautrock, the pair forged a distinctive breakbeat-driven electronic dance sound frequently enriched by vocal elements. Their Marine Parade debut arrived in 2000 via the 12-inch “Less Stress/Special Move,” followed later that year by “Technology/Big Game Hunter.” Subsequent singles “Cakehole” (2002) and “For Lovers, Not Fighters” (2003) preceded the full-length You Can Be Special Too in 2004, an album promoted alongside the separate 12-inches “Restless,” featuring Toastie Taylor, and “Crooked,” featuring Aesop Rock. Two DJ-mix collections—one for the Y4K series on Distinct’ive Breaks Records in 2005 and one for the Fabriclive series on Fabric in 2006—appeared around the same period as the standalone Marine Parade single “Pearl Shot” (2005). Although a second studio album slated for 2007 failed to surface, the duo maintained an active live schedule that included appearances at Coachella and Future Music Festival, with Freeland occasionally introducing fresh tracks during his own DJ sets.
