Biography
In contrast to the intimate atmospherics and expansive soundscapes that defined her work with Daughter, Elena Tonra moved deeper into personal terrain with the solitary Ex:Re project. The sound stays aligned with Daughter, particularly through a mutual appreciation for the xx, yet Ex:Re also weaves in the fragile textures of Bat for Lashes, the aching grace of Cat Power, and the atmospheric reach of Radiohead.
Following the release of three critically lauded sets with Daughter across the 2010s, Tonra revealed Ex:Re in 2018 and delivered its somber self-titled debut that November on 4AD. Composed in the aftermath of a difficult breakup, the record—whose title expands to “Regarding Ex”—functions simultaneously as emotional resolution and a means for Tonra to expel lingering feelings, shaped in collaboration with engineer/producer Fabian Prynn and cellist Josephine Stephenson.
