House duo Fish Go Deep, formed by DJs Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson, have performed for eager club crowds since the late 1980s. Early in their career they secured a long-running residency at Sweat, held at Sir Henry's in their native Cork and widely regarded as one of Ireland's most important clubs. More than ten years at the venue positioned them as early leaders in Europe's expanding dance-music landscape. After closing that chapter in 2001, the pair began performing across the U.K., Ireland, Canada, and the United States. A recording agreement with New Jersey's i! Records broadened their reach; the label issued their first albums, beginning with the 2000 Flying Funk EP. Subsequent tracks by the duo appeared on numerous anthologies from leading house imprints. They also built a substantial radio following through regular programs on Cork's Radio Friendly—one of the station's most listened-to shows—and on Red FM's Go Deep. In 2005 Dowling and Johnson launched Ork Recordings alongside local associate Mark O'Sullivan. The label's breakthrough release, The Cure and the Cause, connected with club audiences from 2006 onward and reached wider European listeners in summer 2007 via a Defected Records campaign. Billboard later listed the track among its "tracks of the summer," moving the previously underground act into mainstream electronic-music view.
