Murry Yates, the frontman of Forty Foot Echo, had previously performed with the Canadian alt-rock group Templar, whose blend of aggressive rock and electronic beats earned them notice. Their record Under the Sun received a Juno Award nomination. Templar dissolved abruptly in November 2001, leaving Yates without a band or a label. He kept working anyway, composing material independently before cutting a demo alongside engineer Joe Moi. Moi, who had previously collaborated with Nickelback, circulated the recordings and generated interest from record companies. Yates secured a deal with Hollywood Records and began forming a new lineup. The move to Los Angeles for recording came first, yet every member remained Canadian: alongside Yates were rhythm guitarist Eric Schraeder, bassist Mike Sanchez, drummer Rob Kurzreiter, and lead guitarist Pete Thorn, who arrived after touring with Five for Fighting. Hollywood issued the self-titled debut album in May 2003. Jim Wirt, known for his work with Hoobastank, handled production, while Tom Lord-Alge mixed the tracks. Reviewers placed the record alongside other post-grunge acts such as Creed, the Calling, and Fuel.
