Ra emerged toward the end of the 1990s as a group of musically adept, relentlessly inventive, fiercely independent, and tenacious hard rockers whose shape-shifting approach coalesced around vocalist Sahaj Ticotin, drummer Skoota Warner, bassist Kirk Lyons, and guitarist Ben Muaro. Their heady fusion of hard rock, funk, nu-metal, and middle eastern-tinged progressive rock yielded an early minor hit when the debut single “Crazy Little Voices” accompanied the end titles of the 1999 horror film The Rage: Carrie 2. The 2000 EP One secured a Universal contract and led directly to the 2002 release From One, a well-received, hard-hitting album spotlighting the singles “Do You Call My Name” and “Rectifier.” Duality, issued in 2005, marked a turn toward a more streamlined and melodic sound that the band sustained on the subsequent albums Black Sun (2008), Black Sheep (2009), and Critical Mass (2013), all appearing on Sahaja Music Records, the imprint founded by Ticotin.
