The lo-fi indie pop and rock concocted by Freak Slug channels the close-miked vulnerability and layered vocals of Elliott Smith alongside the plush, extended harmonies and bedroom textures favored by Barrie and MUNYA, while occasionally folding in jangly edges and bursts of distortion. Following a string of self-produced EPs and full-lengths issued throughout the early 2020s that allowed the U.K. artist to refine those sonic choices and sharpen an unfiltered approach to songwriting, she issued her first Future Classic project, the comparatively mid-fi I Blow Out Big Candles, in 2024.

Xenya Genovese of Manchester first circulated material under the Freak Slug moniker as far back as 2015, beginning with the self-recorded EPs Who stole my bike and Brain in 2015 and 2017. By the close of 2019 she had unveiled the album-length Girlfriend and La Love, both credited solely to her except for guest vocal appearances by Roves and Brad Stank on the latter. In March 2020 she teamed with producer glue70 for the one-off single “Proud,” then delivered the self-produced Videos EP that October. The fourth EP, I’m in Love, surfaced in August 2022, followed three months later by the independent single “Love U Better,” a collaboration with Stank. The May 2023 Viva la Vulva EP, released via Our House, leaned further into unconventional production and lighthearted vocal phrasing.

Freak Slug joined Future Classic ahead of her third album, I Blow Out Big Candles, which arrived in November 2024. At that stage her most forthright recording, it translated prior sonic habits into full-band settings that introduced faint echoes of ’90s alternative rock.
