Biography
Veteran roots rockers the Freddy Jones Band carry forward the spirit of groups such as the Allman Brothers Band while folding in blues and jazz inflections drawn from their Chicago roots. Led by vocalist and guitarist Marty Lloyd, the ensemble displayed its grooving, melodic approach along with a clear aptitude for extended improvisation on the self-titled debut album that appeared in 1992. A standout track, “In a Daydream,” emerged from the 1993 release Waiting for the Night, an album that incorporated country and folk hues and became one of their early commercial successes. The band’s commitment to reaching listeners through live performance was documented on 1995’s North Avenue Wake Up Call, which chronicled their road experiences, and on Mile High Live, their initial concert recording issued in 1999. Although extensive touring occupied much of their time from the late 2000s forward, the group reconvened in the studio for Never Change in 2015, the single “Mirror Ball” in 2023, and a 30th-anniversary rendering of “In a Daydream.”
Marty Lloyd established the Freddy Jones Band during the early 1990s, and the outfit’s debut appeared on the Poor Boys label in 1992. Critics responded favorably, likening the band to Santana and Blues Traveler, while the album moved more than 10,000 units. Capricorn Records subsequently signed the group, resulting in the 1993 album Waiting for the Night. Grammy-winning producer Justin Niebank oversaw the sessions, which introduced folk and country accents, and the record yielded the singles “Take the Time,” “One World,” and “In a Daydream,” the last of which climbed to number 37 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Following that success, Capricorn re-released the debut with additional tracks.
Road experiences directly shaped the material on North Avenue Wake Up Call, the band’s third album, which Niebank again produced in 1995. Its songs captured the life of a working ensemble and reflected the ensemble’s sharpened live skills; the set reached number 186 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, and the single “Waitress” gained radio exposure. Lucid, a jazz-inflected collection released in 1997, attained the number-19 position on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Two years later the group issued its first authorized live album, Mile High Live. A hiatus began in 2001; the band resumed live activity in 2006 and issued the compilation High Spirits, which collected recordings from 1993 to 1995. Recording resumed in 2008, and material from those sessions surfaced on the 2009 hybrid release Time Well Wasted.
After years of live work, the Freddy Jones Band once more entered the studio with Niebank to create Never Change in 2015, the first album to feature former Samples bassist Rich Ross. Further sessions in the early 2020s produced the 2021 single “Connected” and a 2022 remake of “In a Daydream” marking its 30th anniversary. The single “Mirror Ball” followed in early 2023.
