Comprising Sindri Már Sigfússon from SinFang, Jófríður Ákadóttir from Samaris, and Úlfur Einarsson from Oyama, Gangly formed as an atmospheric electronic trio based in Reykjavik, Iceland. The three friends launched the project in 2014 by gathering to test songwriting approaches and creative notions. They pursued a fusion of dark, ethereal R&B and sleek electronica, briefly weighing the moniker Leather Doves before selecting Gangly for its meaning of tall, thin, and awkward.

Their debut release arrived in 2015 with the dysfunctional, anxious love song “Fuck with Someone Else,” distributed simply by forwarding journalists an email that contained only the track title and a link. From the start the members leaned into anonymity to heighten intrigue and mystery, a tactic they recognized as effective once they attended Reykjavik gatherings and heard attendees speculating about the song’s origin. Across the following years they issued additional low-key, slow-burning recordings—“Holy Grounds” and “Blow Out” in 2016, followed by “Whole Again” in 2017—each paired with a celestial, mystifying 3-D animated video that mirrored the woozy mystery of the sound and ghostly lyrics. In 2016 Gangly also joined Universal sub-label AMF and completed a debut European tour that featured several appearances at that year’s Iceland Airwaves festival in their hometown Reykjavik.
