Born Tommy Giles Rogers, Jr., the musician gained primary recognition as lead vocalist for the experimental metalcore band Between the Buried and Me. While that group readied itself to enter the studio for a follow-up album, Rogers decided the moment had arrived to pour his energies into an entirely separate creative outlet. The result emerged under the moniker Giles. During downtime between tours he assembled the material, retaining the turbulent spirit of his main project yet steering it away from dense metal constructions and toward his longstanding interest in electronic sounds. Among the reference points he named were Fischerspooner, Nine Inch Nails, and Adult. Victory Records characterized the finished work as a "combination of electroclash and industrial music written with a metal mentality." Rogers composed and produced the album himself, with Jamie King contributing to the recording and mixing stages. The self-titled album reached stores in April 2005.
