Biography
Helmed by singer and songwriter Kathy Patino, Girl K blend bouncy, bittersweet indie pop with moments of hooky, fuzzier indie rock while venturing into steelier pop territory. The project originated as Patino’s solo endeavor, issuing the melancholy debut LP Sunflower Court in 2017 before expanding into a four-piece on the 2019 release For Now. Remaining rooted in guitar-based indie pop, Patino drew from sleeker ’80s pop for the 2021 EP Girl K Is for the People. Building on that direction, the third full-length My Future arrived in 2024 as a bolder electronic pop statement shaped alongside producer Heartgaze.
Girl K first emerged in 2017 as the solo alias of D.I.Y. musician Kathy Patino. Her tender guitar pop debut single “Neighbors” surfaced mid-year and later appeared on the introspective Sunflower Court, released that October; although a solo recording at heart, the album included production by Matthew Morgan and full-band arrangements. After moving from open-mike nights to booking gigs in Chicago, Patino added Kevin Sheppard on guitar, Alex Pieczynski on bass, and Ajay Raghuraman on drums. Their first album as a quartet, the invigorated For Now, was produced by Doug Malone and issued in March 2019. The following year, Girl K captured an Audiotree Live session.
The September 2021 EP Girl K Is for the People, issued on Take This to Heart Records, featured a revised lineup that brought Tony Mest—known for work with Kafiza, Rat Tally, and Burr Oak—behind the drums in place of Raghuraman. The set also adopted a slightly more streamlined approach as Patino incorporated inspiration from ’80s pop and MIDI keyboard patches. She leaned fully into electronic elements on the next album, My Future, which dispensed with drums and enlisted Heartgaze, aka Clemente Calandra, to serve as co-producer with Patino, co-recordist with Pieczynski, and mixer. My Future appeared on Take This to Heart Records in June 2024.
