In the closing months of 2009, the San Francisco-based psych-rock force known as Golden Void assembled, initially functioning as a side endeavor. Having relocated from San Diego to the Bay Area to join his girlfriend—who would soon become his spouse—organist Camilla Saufley of the stoner rock group Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, guitarist and vocalist Isaiah Mitchell from the potent Earthless outfit reached out to his high-school companions, drummer Justin Pinkerton and bassist Aaron Morgan. The pair, already based in San Francisco and active with Eyes and Roots of Orchis respectively, shared his aim of launching a fresh ensemble. This quartet made its debut via the restricted 7-inch release titled The Curve, issued toward the end of 2011 through Valley King Records, fusing elements of classic rock, stoner metal, and old-school psychedelia into a sound dominated by guitars and featuring Mitchell's extensive lead work. Delays plagued the emergence of their debut album due to the musicians' commitments to various other endeavors, coupled with the nuptials of Saufley and Mitchell as well as those of additional members during that period. Relying on infrequent performances and composition meetings, they assembled their self-titled LP, which appeared in late 2012 via Thrill Jockey Records.
