Biography
Graham Colton, who grew up in Oklahoma City as the band's singer and guitarist, relocated to Dallas to study at Southern Methodist University and there met Turtle, a local guitarist known only as Turtle. The pair began composing material together before recruiting Drew Nichols as a second guitarist. Teenage drummer Jordan Elder joined next and in turn brought bassist Ryan Tallent into the fold. Steady local gigs eventually earned the Graham Colton Band an opening slot with Counting Crows, after which the group shared bills with John Mayer, Jewel, and the Dave Matthews Band. Those high-profile appearances produced a contract with Universal Records. In July 2003 the quartet tracked its debut at Southern Tracks studio in Atlanta with Brendan O'Brien, known for his work with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen, behind the board. The resulting album, Drive, appeared in May 2004 and was followed by extensive touring.
