Affiliated for years with Rick Ross via the Maybach Music imprint, Texas rapper Gunplay crafts intense tracks driven by vivid narratives concerning wealth accumulation, criminal endeavors, and overcoming adversity. His aggressive delivery and hard-edged beats maintained momentum from initial mixtapes onward, reaching greater polish on studio efforts such as ACTIVE in 2018.

Richard Morales, Jr. entered the world in El Paso, Texas before growing up in Carol City, Florida. Involvement in drug sales during adolescence introduced him to gangsta rap, prompting his 1997 entry into the Rick Ross-linked crew Triple C's alongside Torch and Young Breed. The group appeared on Ross projects including Port of Miami in 2006 and Trilla in 2008, before issuing their Maybach full-length Custom Cars & Cycles in 2009. Morales secured an individual Def Jam deal in 2012 and dropped the 601 & Snort mixtape featuring Kendrick Lamar as a guest.

His unvarnished first album Living Legend arrived in 2015 through Def Jam and Maybach, highlighted by the club success "Wuzhanindoe" that included YG. The project reached the Billboard 200 while landing below the top ten on the Rap Albums chart and incorporated guest spots from Yo Gotti and Curren$y.

A pair of solo albums, The Plug and Haram, surfaced in 2017 along with the joint release Dreadlocks & Headshots alongside Mozzy. The following year brought Mustard & Mayo, a collaborative LP with Peryon J. Kee, plus ACTIVE as his fourth studio outing that summer, again showcasing Rick Ross, Curren$y, and Masspike Miles. A second team-up with Mozzy produced the 2019 mixtape Chop Stixx & Banana Clips, after which Morales put out the standalone cut "Pay the Piper" in 2020 together with the Rick Ross-featured "Pyrex Poppin'."
