Huntington Beach, California punks Guttermouth came together in 1989 around vocalist Mark "Mercury" Adkins, guitarists Derek Davis and Scott Sheldon, drummer Captain James T. Nunn, and bassist Stever Rapp, who had stepped in for founding member Clint Weinrich. Their first recording, the 1990 single "Puke," preceded the full-length debut Full Length two years later. In 1994 the band moved to Nitro Records for Friendly People. Teri Yakimoto surfaced in 1996, Musical Monkey arrived the following year, and the concert document Live from the Pharmacy appeared in 1998. Gorgeous, their sixth studio album and the first to feature drummer Ty Smith, was released in 1999. Mid-2000 brought Covered with Ants, their initial release on Epitaph.

The group maintained a rapid studio pace, delivering the expansive Gusto in fall 2002 and the pointed Eat Your Face in 2004, now featuring guitarist Don Horne and former Slick Shoes bassist Kevin Clark. That summer Smith exited to focus on Bullets and Octane, and the band was removed from the Warped Tour in August; Adkins later stated the departure was voluntary, prompted by distaste for political remarks made onstage by other acts. After leaving Epitaph, Guttermouth joined the Volcom Entertainment roster in late 2005. They contributed "April 29th, 1992" to the Sublime tribute Forever Free and issued their Beyond Warped Live Music Series installment in January 2006. Shave the Planet, their tenth album, followed that August, recorded by Adkins, Sheldon, Horne, Weinrich, and drummer Ryan Farrell.

A decade passed without new material after the album's promotional cycle. Upon reconvening, the lineup included Adkins, bassist Justin Van Westbroek, and guitarist Geoff Armstrong. Two EPs appeared in 2016: Got It Made in summer and New Car Smell that winter.
