Biography
HTRK, a cult favorite from Australia, surfaced in the mid-2000s with an electronic post-punk style that mixed bleak atmospheres and seductive appeal through its dirge-like drum-machine pulses and sensuous vocals. The band initially pursued a fragmented noise-rock direction on the 2005 debut Nostalgia, yet its sound grew more polished and emotionally penetrating across the following decade on the 2014 album Psychic 9-5 Club and 2019's Venus in Leo. Over time the group moved toward a more organic method, most clearly on the sparse, acoustic-guitar-centered Rhinestones that arrived in 2021.
Formed in Melbourne in 2003, HTRK—short for Hate Rock and also known as Hate Rock Trio—arose after bassist Sean Stewart and guitarist Nigel Yang lost their prior band Portraits of Hugo Perez; they then invited vocalist Jonnine Standish to join a project modeled on the Birthday Party, built around deliberate mechanical repetition from a drum machine plus Jonnine's percussion, plain basslines, and loud guitar feedback. Their approach stood at odds with Australia's rising '80s rock revival, so early concerts drew uneven responses. The trio followed its Krautrock interests to Berlin, where it cut a demo issued in 2005 as the self-released Nostalgia in a limited run of 500 copies. Fire Records later gave the album an official U.K. release in 2007, after which the band settled in London. Soon afterward it recorded its first proper full-length, Marry Me Tonight, with former Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S. Howard; Blast First Petite issued that album in 2009.
Tragedy followed in 2010 when Stewart took his own life at age 29. Yang and Standish continued, albeit reluctantly, and signed with Ghostly International for the September 2011 release Work (Work, Work). Although already half-finished before Stewart's death and therefore still marked by his presence, the record was noticeably leaner and less saturated with feedback than earlier material. After issuing the 2012 split EP Part Time Punks Radio Sessions with Tropic of Cancer, HTRK returned in 2014 with its third studio album, Psychic 9-5 Club. This intimate, sensuously minimalist set signaled a genuine new chapter and contained some of the band's most powerful songs. Five more years passed before the romantic, richly detailed 2019 full-length Venus in Leo. Also that year HTRK supplied a fully instrumental soundtrack for the scientology documentary Over the Rainbow. The band's fifth studio album, Rhinestones, emerged in September 2021 and reflected its growing use of stripped-down, noir-ish folk and country textures.
