Drawn from a Paul Simon composition, Immaculate Machine formed as an indie rock trio based in Victoria, British Columbia. Brooke Gallupe on guitar and vocals, Kathryn Calder on keyboards and vocals, and Luke Kozlowski on drums and vocals—longtime friends all—established the group in October 2002. The trio issued its self-released The View EP in 2003 and the full-length Transporter in 2004. After a Vancouver performance, Mint Records signed the band in spring 2005 and put out Ones and Zeroes later that year; the following year also brought the French-language EP Les Uns Mais Pas Les Autres, which reworked six tracks. Calder contributed piano and vocals to the New Pornographers' Twin Cinema and joined the subsequent tour. For the 2007 album Fables the group expanded its sound with musical saw, strings, and backing vocals from Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, delivering a release that strengthened an already notable catalog. High on Jackson Hill appeared in 2009.
