Biography
After crossing paths at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama during the late 2010s, vocalist, violinist, and songwriter Georgia Ellery—who also founded Black Country, New Road—and electronic producer Taylor Skye launched the project Jockstrap. The deliberately provocative band name belied the refined yet unsettling music they created, where Ellery's translucent compositions and soft vocals collided with Skye's abrasive, erratic beats. Following a pair of independent releases, the duo joined Warp Records, which issued their 2020 EP Wicked City. Two years later they compiled sufficient material for the full-length debut I Love You Jennifer B, and in 2023 they followed it with the total remix I<3UQTINVU.
Both musicians studied at Guildhall, where Ellery pursued jazz violin while also sketching songs at the piano and sharing early demos with Skye. Around 2018 they formalized Jockstrap, enlisting string-playing friends to expand the recordings and support live performances, all while Ellery continued developing Black Country, New Road in parallel. Their first EP, Love Is the Key to the City, appeared that year and quickly attracted notice from journalists, listeners, and fellow artists drawn to the pair's elusive aesthetic. In November 2018 they joined Dean Blunt's Soul on Fire EP alongside Mica Levi and A$AP Rocky. Momentum led to a 2020 contract with Warp, and ahead of the follow-up EP Wicked City the group issued the singles "Acid" and "The City," with the record arriving in early June. The subsequent two years were spent completing tracks for I Love You Jennifer B, which surfaced in September 2022 as a summation of the stylistic threads explored on the EPs. The album earned strong critical praise, prompting extensive international touring. In November 2023 the duo revisited the material as I<3UQTINVU—short for "I Love You Cutie, I Envy You"—with Skye handling the primary deconstruction and reconstruction while Babymorocco, IAN STARR, Coby Sey & Ersatz, and additional guests contributed.
