Joe Ascione stands out as a skilled percussionist whose primary work has taken place within the swing, mainstream, and bop genres. His involvement in lively, improvisational recordings issued by Germany's Nagel-Heyer imprint brought him wider notice. Having drawn inspiration from Gene Krupa, whom he encountered in 1971, along with Buddy Rich, he has maintained a steady presence at jazz gatherings and mainstream events across the globe beginning in the early 1980s. The first album he led, My Buddy from 1997, honors Buddy Rich.
