Biography
Jonti Danilewitz produces a lush, dreamy blend of psychedelic pop and left-field hip-hop that aligned naturally with Stones Throw Records, the revered Los Angeles label. Layered tracks typically combine his pillow-soft vocals, multi-tracked into choral form, alongside rich strings, vintage synthesizers, trippy beats, mellow acoustic guitars, and numerous other elegantly layered sounds. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he turned to music creation only after settling in Sydney, Australia. Early projects there included hip-hop beats released under the name Danimals, membership in the band Sherlock's Daughter, and a collaboration with super-producer Mark Ronson on an advertising campaign's soundtrack. He later joined Stones Throw, his favorite label and a home for kindred artists such as Koushik and the Stepkids. The debut single "Firework Spraying Moon" and the full-length Twirligig both surfaced in 2011, with the companion LP Sine & Moon arriving in 2012. Relocations carried him to Los Angeles and New York before a return to Sydney; en route he opened for Gotye on worldwide tours and worked with BadBadNotGood, King Krule, and Earl Sweatshirt. He also served as a touring member of the Avalanches and contributed to their comeback album Wildflower. His second proper full-length, Tokorats, appeared in 2017 and featured contributions from former Odd Future MC Hodgy together with Australia-based poet/songwriter Sampa the Great.
