JT built a reputation for crafting brash, playful party anthems while performing as one half of the multi-platinum Miami rap duo City Girls, though her individual releases tackle more intimate subjects. The duo first gained traction through a pair of 2018 projects titled Period and Girl Code, then reached the U.S. Top 40 with the 2019 singles "Twerk" featuring Cardi B and "Act Up." JT captured her post-incarceration return in the solo track "JT First Day Out." City Girls followed with the full-length City on Lock, which landed inside the Top 30 in 2020, after which JT lent her voice to recordings by Summer Walker and Nicki Minaj and unveiled the hard-edged "No Bars" in 2023. Her debut mixtape, City Cinderella, surfaced the next year and contained the Hot 100 single "Okay."

Born Jatavia Shakara Johnson, she spent her early years in Miami's Liberty City and Carol City sections. There she formed a close bond with Caresha Brownlee, later known as Yung Miami, and the pair cut their first City Girls track, the ex-boyfriend diss "Fu*k Dat Ni**a," in 2017. Quality Control placed the song on its Control the Streets, Volume 1 compilation before the year ended. City Girls issued the mixtape Period in 2018 and joined Drake on his chart-topping "In My Feelings," yet JT soon faced charges of aggravated identity theft and entered prison in July of that year. Yung Miami kept promoting the act during the incarceration, allowing their debut album Girl Code to debut at number 55 on the Billboard 200 after its later-2018 release; the project carried the platinum-certified singles "Twerk" with Cardi B and "Act Up." While serving her sentence, JT moved to a halfway house in Atlanta that permitted daytime departures and used the opportunity to record the solo single "JT First Day Out," which recounted her time inside.

City Girls returned in 2020 with their second album, City on Lock, peaking at number 29 on the Billboard 200. Their standalone single "Twerkulator" became a viral sensation in 2021, and JT joined Summer Walker on "Ex for a Reason." In 2022 she contributed to the "Queen Mix" of Nicki Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl" alongside BIA, Katie Got Bandz, and additional artists, then appeared with Latto on the remix of Hitkidd & GloRilla's "F.N.F. (Let's Go)." While City Girls continued dropping singles that included collaborations with Usher and Diddy, JT released the solo cut "No Bars" in 2023 and featured on Kali Uchis' "Muñekita" with El Alfa. July 2024 brought her first mixtape, City Cinderella, which showcased guest appearances from DJ Khaled, Stunna Girl, and Clip; alongside the singles "Sideways" and "Okay," the project included "Uncle Al," built around a sample from Miami bass icon DJ Uncle Al.
