Julien-K

California-based alt-electronic group Julien-K specializes in digitally distorted, high-octane synth rock that draws equally from goth, synth pop, and industrial traditions. Formed in the early 2000s by Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck after the dissolution of Orgy, the project brought in Anthony "Fu" Valcic to sustain a sonic approach already recognizable to followers of their prior band. Ominous, dark, and tinged with sensuality, the first fruits of this collaboration surfaced in 2003 via a demo featuring songs such as "Kick the Bass" and "Technical Difficulties," the latter of which later appeared on the 2007 Transformers soundtrack and on various video game scores, most prominently within the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The band's official debut album, Death to Analog, followed in 2009 under the production guidance of Tim Palmer (The Cure, HIM) and Chester Bennington, who had previously joined Derakh and Shuck to establish Dead by Sunrise. Their second full-length, We're Here with You, emerged in 2012.

A fresh chapter began in 2014 when the bright, pop-leaning single "California Noir" introduced an expansive new undertaking bearing the same title. The crowd-funded California Noir: Chapter One - Analog Beaches & Digital Cities appeared in early 2015, succeeded by Chapter Two - Nightlife in Neon in 2016. In the year that followed, Julien-K assembled more than ten years of archival recordings into the expansive 64-track collection Time Capsule: A Future Retrospective, which gathered previously unreleased tracks, demos, and live performances. For their fifth album, the group again relied on fan support, ultimately surpassing their original crowdfunding target fourfold to complete 2020's Harmonic Disruptor. This heavier, guitar-driven release spotlighted one of their standout singles, "Shut Down Your Soul."
