Biography
Born in Miami Beach, Florida, to Cuban-American parents, singer and songwriter Katriana Sandra Huguet performs under the stage name Kat Dahlia. At fifteen she started penning original material, often layering her lyrics over instrumentals sourced from online streaming services. Reaching eighteen, she relocated from Miami to New York, using earnings accumulated during her time as a waitress to finance the move. After establishing herself in New York City, she released an EP paired with a music video that drew the interest of Sylvia Rhone, the former Universal Motown executive. Impressed by the work, Rhone placed Dahlia on her Epic imprint Vested in Culture, characterizing the newcomer as a gifted, driven, and elusive amalgam of Nelly Furtado, Santigold, and Gwen Stefani. The autobiographical debut single “Gangsta” was given visual treatment by director Samantha Lecca. Once out, the song attracted wide exposure on MTV and a range of music outlets. Vested in Culture issued the track as the lead cut on a three-song EP in March 2013. Dahlia’s first full-length project, My Garden, followed the next January. Her third EP, 20s, 50s, 100s, surfaced in 2016. The year after, she joined Fat Joe and Remy Ma on their joint release Plata o Plomo and soon afterward issued her own single “Friday Night Majic.”
