Kinesis, the punk pop quartet originating from Bolton in Lancashire, came together in September 2000 after Michael Bromley (b. 30 September 1983; vocals/guitar), Conor McGloin (b. 14 December 1984; guitar), Tom Marshall (b. 14 April 1983; bass) and Neil Chow (b. 28 June 1984; drums) convened at a rehearsal studio to test their chemistry. Their initial five-track demo soon circulated as The Flowers Are Dead, although the group had never meant for the material to reach a wider audience, with only ten copies reportedly produced. The musicians sharpened their abilities daily and returned to the studio expecting to capture another five tracks, yet a burst of creativity expanded the sessions into the eight-song set that became 2001’s Worship Yourself. Released on the White Noise label, this second EP received airplay on BBC Radio 1’s Evening Session, though live performances remained confined to weekends and holidays while half the members were still in school. Once summer 2002 removed those restrictions, the band signed a publishing deal and secured its first national tour as support for Biffy Clyro and Hell Is For Heroes. Shortly afterward they joined the roster of Independiente, which led to further high-profile support dates, among them a December 2002 show backing the Manic Street Preachers at Brixton Academy. Their debut album Handshakes For Bullets appeared in September 2003 and drew favorable notices.
