British neo-prog outfit Pure Reason Revolution merges progressive rock, classic rock, grunge, pop, and electronica into a melodic, accessible, and occasionally expansive psychedelic style.

The group originated in 2003 at the University of Westminster in London when students Jon Courtney (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Greg Jong (vocals, guitars), and Jim Dobson (keyboards, guitar, vocals) began collaborating. Chloë Alper (vocals, bass) and Courtney’s brother Andrew (drums) soon completed the lineup. Courtney, Alper, and Andrew had previously performed together in the Reading indie-pop band the Sunset Sound, while the brothers had earlier played in the pop-punk group Gel and Alper had been a member of the riot-grrrl band Period Pains. Their shared interests in grunge and classic prog, along with an emphasis on close vocal harmonies, drew from influences including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Super Furry Animals.

PRR issued their first single, “Apprentice of the Universe,” on Alan McGee’s Poptones label in 2004. The resulting attention prompted Sony BMG to sign them, leading to the 2005 release of the EP Cautionary Tales for the Brave, which featured the twelve-minute track “The Bright Ambassadors of Morning,” followed by the 2006 debut album The Dark Third. Personnel shifts occurred around this period: Jong departed several months before the album’s release and was succeeded by fellow student Jamie Willcox; Andrew Courtney exited afterward and was replaced by Paul Glover, formerly of Wire Jesus; Dobson also left in 2006. Sony BMG subsequently dropped the band after the album underperformed commercially.

The group then moved to the German label Superball, which issued the 2009 album Amor Vincit Omnia and the 2010 album Hammer and Anvil; both explored an electronic direction that produced a distinctive sound. In 2011 the band disbanded, with members pursuing separate endeavors in Flood, Bullet Height, Tiny Giant, and Twin Sun.

Pure Reason Revolution reunited in 2018 and signed with the neo-prog imprint Inside Out, which had previously managed the European release of their debut album. On the 2020 release Eupnea the core sound largely returned, though only Jon Courtney and Alper remained from the original roster. Jong rejoined for the 2022 album Above Cirrus. For the sixth album, 2024’s Coming up to Consciousness, Alper—occupied with touring commitments alongside James—was temporarily succeeded on vocals by Annicke Shireen of Heilung, while My Vitriol’s Ravi Kesavaram handled drums and LeSoir’s Ingo Jetten played bass.
