Biography
Formed in San Francisco during 1997, Kumquat emerged after songwriter and guitarist Elissa Daly encountered vocalist Bobby Rooney along with bassist Ingrid Smart and drummer Eric Froshneider. The musicians honed their sound through rehearsals at Downtown Rehearsal Studios, aiming to craft avant garde rock dense with effects, feedback, and distortion. They refined an expansive two-hour set before launching into performances across assorted clubs and parties. Although the live shows drew acclaim, Froshneider grew dissatisfied with the group’s trajectory and departed, prompting the arrival of Billy Davison on drums. The band then shifted operations to Merlin Studios, where encounters with members of The Signal led to an offer of recording facilities. That arrangement yielded the 7" single The Fallen Child Porn Star. Just as plans solidified for a Northwestern United States tour behind the release, Davison exited, and former Bully Pulpit West drummer Allan Canumay stepped in to fill the role. Kumquat issued its debut album Indie Rock 4evR in 2001; tracked at Roof Brother Studios in Oakland, the sessions relied on two-inch analog tape. Observers have frequently drawn parallels between the band’s work and that of Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth.
