Biography
Latto rose to prominence as an Atlanta rapper whose clever wordplay and natural delivery quickly distinguished her in the hip-hop scene. Winning a reality television contest while still in her teens led directly to a recording contract and early buzz. Several mixtapes preceded her mainstream breakthrough, which arrived via the 2019 single "B*tch from Da Souf" and the full-length studio debut Queen of Da Souf in 2020. That project reached number 44 on the Billboard 200, setting the stage for the 2022 follow-up 777 that peaked at number 15. Her 2023 Grammy nomination for Best New Artist preceded the platinum-certified Cardi B collaboration "Put It on Da Floor Again," and she unveiled the third studio album Sugar Honey Iced Tea in August 2024.
Alyssa Michelle Stephens entered the world in 1998 and spent her childhood on Atlanta’s south side, where she first picked up the mic at ten. Biracial by background, with a Black father and white mother, she initially performed under the moniker Miss Mulatto. Local stages, opening slots, and consistent social-media presence built a loyal regional audience before she reached national attention. In 2016, at sixteen, she entered the Queen Latifah- and Jermaine Dupri-produced Lifetime series The Rap Game. After eight weeks of competition against four other hopefuls, she emerged victorious and promptly inked a deal with Dupri’s So So Def Recordings, releasing the single "No More Talking." An eight-track self-titled project closed out that year, after which she shortened her stage name to Latto and began developing fresh material.
Her sound grew more assertive on the 2017 mixtape Latto Let ’Em Know, which expanded to include appearances from Bandit Gang Marco, Lil Key, and Molly Brazzy. A ten-song self-titled mixtape followed in 2018. Two EPs arrived the next year, beginning with Big Latto, whose single "B*tch from Da Souf" amassed millions of streams and became her signature track. Hit the Latto appeared later in November. Signing with RCA Records, she issued her proper debut album Queen of Da Souf in August 2020; the set featured the breakout single alongside guest spots from Gucci Mane, City Girls, 21 Savage, and additional artists. She made the name change to Latto official in May 2021. That September, "Big Energy" climbed to number 14 on the Hot 100 as the lead single from 777, whose further tracks "Soufside" and "Wheelie" featuring 21 Savage helped the album reach number 15 on the Billboard 200. The non-album cut "FTCU" with GloRilla and Gangsta Boo closed 2021. A Best New Artist nomination at the 2023 Grammy Awards arrived alongside the Lu Kala duet "Lottery" and the remix "Put It on Da Floor Again," which peaked at number 13 on the Hot 100 and earned platinum status. She also joined South Korean singer Jung Kook on his chart-topping debut solo release "Seven."
The 2024 single "Sunday Service" registered on the Hot 100 ahead of Sugar Honey Iced Tea, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 upon its August arrival. Young Nudy, Mariah the Scientist, and Teezo Touchdown appeared among its contributors, while the deluxe edition added a "Sunday Service" remix carrying new verses from Flo Milli and Megan Thee Stallion.
