With a bold and direct approach to her craft, Saweetie achieved her initial breakthrough via the gold-certified single "ICY GRL" from her first EP, High Maintenance, issued in 2017. Serving as an empowering anthem centered on ambition and self-reliance, the track wove together her musical touchstones, which ranged from the styles of Lil' Kim, Trina, and Khia to the sound of R&B performer Teedra Moses. She further notched a Top 40 pop placement in 2019 with "My Type," drawn from the ICY EP, and maintained Hot 100 visibility through later releases such as "Tap In" in 2020, the 2021 collaboration "Best Friend" alongside Doja Cat, and "Closer" featuring H.E.R. in 2022. While awaiting the long-postponed arrival of her debut album Pretty Bitch Music, she sustained listener interest through projects including The Single Life in 2022 and Pretty Hu$tler Mix in 2024.

Diamonté Harper entered the world in Santa Clara and spent her formative years across the Bay Area, with much of her time spent in Hayward. Although she harbored early dreams of rapping, strong academic performance earned her a full scholarship to college, culminating in a degree completed after stints at San Diego State and the University of Southern California. Her focus on music sharpened after Instagram clips of her performances began drawing notice. A casual, upbeat set of rhymes set to the beat of Khia's 2002 single "My Neck, My Back" evolved into "ICY GRL," marking her introduction as Saweetie. The official video, posted in October 2017, quickly gained widespread traction online with millions of views and secured a recording contract with Warner Bros.

Her opening EP, High Maintenance, landed in March 2018 and debuted at number 32 on Billboard's R&B/hip-hop chart. The key track "ICY GRL" received gold certification the next January. Nearly a year after High Maintenance appeared, she issued her follow-up EP, ICY. Although two cuts featured Quavo, the London on Da Track-produced standalone number "My Type" propelled her into the Billboard Hot 100's Top 40 that August.

"Tap In" surfaced in June 2020, with "Back to the Streets" featuring Jhené Aiko arriving that October. January 2021 brought both the Doja Cat collaboration "Best Friend" and the EP Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1. The 2022 single "Closer" with H.E.R. reached number 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. These recordings were originally positioned as precursors to her first full-length, Pretty Bitch Music. Slated for release as early as 2021, the project faced postponement amid reported adjustments to its production. Subsequent EPs emerged, among them The Single Life in 2022, while individual tracks included 2023's "Birthday" with YG and Tyga and 2024's "Do It for the Bay" with P-Lo. The fifth EP, Pretty Hu$tler Mix, appeared in May 2024 and spotlighted the single "Richtivities."
