Limblifter came together while two participants remained active in the like-minded power pop outfit Age of Electric. The group's punchy rock has always centered on Ryan Dahle, its only unchanging member. With Kurt Dahle supplying vocals and drums and Ian Somers on bass, the trio issued its debut album, Limblifter, through Mercury Records in early 1996. After that release, Age of Electric formally disbanded, freeing the Dahle brothers to focus solely on Limblifter as Todd Kerns and John Kerns launched Static in Stereo. Ian Somers exited before March 2000, when Todd Fancey joined on bass for the follow-up, Bellaclava. Whereas the first album required just one week to record, the sophomore effort consumed 100 days and arrived as a self-released project. Later in 2000, Kurt Dahle and Fancey entered the Canadian supergroup the New Pornographers, which led Ryan Dahle to form a fresh lineup.
