Biography
The Vancouver-based alternative outfit Econoline Crush, featuring vocalist Trevor Hurst, guitarists Robbie Morfitt and Ziggy, drummer Nico Quintal, and bassist Don Binns, built a substantial reputation across Canada. Major chart achievements followed, along with support slots on Canadian and European tours alongside KISS, the Young Gods, Die Krupps, and the Tea Party. Formation occurred after Hurst relocated to Seattle and responded to an advertisement seeking musicians in a regional music publication. The group took its name from the French novelist Euxebe Auxtry’s novel Jeu de Fountaine, where “econoline crush” referred to a substance that supplied optimism to the despairing, and the resulting sound fused alternative guitar rock with electronic elements. Once the band shifted its base from Seattle to Vancouver, it developed a dedicated audience through the 1994 release Purge and the 1996 album Affliction. Peak commercial impact arrived with The Devil You Know, which attained platinum status in Canada. The fourth album, Brand New History, arrived in 2001 and adopted a more dynamic method aimed at preserving the ensemble’s onstage vitality. Guitarist Ziggy, also known as Ziggy Sigmund, passed away on March 8, 2022, at the age of 56.
