British band Pitchshifter emerged from the late-'80s industrial underground as confrontational voices on social issues whose approach echoed the raw spirit of early British punk and American hardcore acts like the Minutemen and Dead Kennedys. After inking a deal with Earache in 1992, the group issued its initial recordings—the mini-album Submit and the full-length Desensitized the following year—which solidified its standing within the industrial scene while exposing American audiences to its sound. Live performances incorporating programming and projected slides helped extend that reach across the States, even as the band's provocative stance largely blocked mainstream radio exposure. With the arrival of Infotainment in 1996, Pitchshifter began moving beyond its industrial foundations by incorporating computer technology to carry its pointed social and political messages toward broader listeners. The record delivered sharp aggression paired with rapid techno breaks rarely heard in commercial fare, and it closed with complimentary samples that the band urged fans to “steal” for personal projects. Extensive touring over the next several years alongside Korn, Tool, Ministry, and Girls Against Boys drew the attention of major label DGC, which signed the act in 1997. That partnership yielded the 1998 album www.pitchshifter.com, whose hard, punk-inflected breakbeats leaned into a distinctive, high-energy strain of drum'n'bass constructed from both sampled material and live instrumentation. Activity in the studio remained intermittent throughout the 2000s, marked by the release of Deviant on MCA in 2000 and PSI on Sanctuary in 2002, before the members regrouped in 2009 to record fresh material.
