Originating from Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Watchmen operated as a Canadian alternative rock outfit whose robust, roots-infused pop approach invited comparisons with acts including the Tragically Hip, R.E.M., and the Wallflowers. The unit coalesced in 1988 around vocalist Danny Greaves, guitarist Joey Serlin, bassist Peter Loewen, and drummer Sammy Kohn, reaching its commercial height in the mid- to late 1990s with a string of gold- and platinum-certified albums such as McLaren Furnace Room (1992), In the Trees (1994), Brand New Day (1996), and Silent Radar (1998). Its last studio recording surfaced in 2001 as the double-LP Slomotion, which bundled a greatest-hits collection and climbed to number six on the Canadian charts before eventually earning gold certification, consistent with most of the band’s prior releases.
