Biography
Born in Burnaby, British Columbia, on 29 June 1971, singer-songwriter Matthew Good anchored the Matthew Good Band, one of Canada’s foremost alternative rock acts throughout the 1990s. His earliest performances took place within an acoustic folk group that criss-crossed the Canadian club circuit and cut a five-song demo. Returning to Vancouver, Good assembled a rock lineup featuring bassist Geoff Lloyd and drummer Charlie Quintana. Quintana soon gave way to Ian Browne, born 12 November 1973 in New Westminster, British Columbia, while Dave Genn, born 2 March 1969 in White Rock, British Columbia, joined on guitar and keyboards. This configuration independently issued Last Of The Ghetto Astronauts in 1995; the album secured rotation on regional alternative outlets and moved more than 20,000 units, prompting a deal with the American imprint Private Music. Although the band completed the Raygun EP for the label, corporate decisions terminated the agreement. Underdogs was then tracked independently at Greenhouse Studios in Burnaby. A distribution arrangement with A&M Records, together with heavy airplay for the singles “Everything Is Automatic” and “Apparitions,” propelled the record to platinum status. In 1998 Rich Priske, born 29 August 1969, assumed bass duties from Lloyd. Universal Records released the band’s next album, Beautiful Midnight, the following September, and it quickly reached the summit of the Canadian charts. Sessions for The Audio Of Being proved turbulent: Genn departed mid-recording, and Good underwent demanding throat surgery. Once the album appeared, Good dissolved the group and launched a solo career whose first offering, Avalanche, arrived in 2003.
