Biography
Lola Beltrán carried ranchera and mariachi traditions from Mexico’s urban neighborhoods onto global platforms through the distinctive power of her voice. Across four decades of activity she cut more than seventy songs, many of which earned gold certification. Among her signature recordings were the enduring pieces “Huapango Torero,” “La Cigarra,” and “Paloma Negra.” In 1982 the Mexican government honored her cultural diplomacy with the Medalla del Artista del Extranjero.
While employed as a secretary at a Mexican radio station, Beltrán received decisive encouragement from the celebrated vocalist Matilde Sanchez and from Miguel Aceves Mejía. Their backing enabled her first professional appearance in 1954; an industry listener soon arranged a contract with Peerless Records. Beyond her work as a singer she also produced recordings and appeared as an actress in several motion pictures, among them Cucurucucu Paloma, drawn from the popular composition by Tomás Méndez. In 1994 she marked forty years in music with a concert at the Palacio de las Bellas Artes. Two years afterward she suffered a fatal stroke.
