Yolanda del Río, born in Pachuca in Hidalgo state, ranks among the most successful ranchera singers. As a child she took up singing and soon appeared on radio broadcasts and at local festivals. Before reaching her teens she made her television debut, then secured a contract with RCA Victor after an audition for A&R director Felipe "El Indio" Jiménez. Within twelve months her single "La Hija de Nadie" moved more than a million copies and established her as a major star. She swiftly extended her live performances outside Mexico, reaching audiences in the United States, Central America, and Europe. Further successes followed with "Se Me Olvidó Otra Vez," "Tus Maletas en la Puerta," "Llorar, Llorar, Llorar," and "Camas Separadas," ultimately bringing her worldwide sales close to 20 million records. In 1977 she entered cinema with the well-received film La Hija de Nadie and several subsequent pictures. Recording and touring continued through the 1990s, and she received a Grammy nomination in 1984.
