Biography
Lola Young brings smoky vocals and mature songwriting to her work as an R&B-rooted vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose stylistically fluid approach has drawn parallels with Amy Winehouse and Adele. The South East London native first attracted notice with her 2019 debut Intro EP, yet her decisive breakthrough arrived in 2021 when her atmospheric take on “Together in Electric Dreams” accompanied John Lewis & Partners’ yearly Christmas commercial and she earned a place on the 2022 BRITs Rising Star shortlist, an acknowledgment that highlighted her distinct voice. That momentum carried into her 2023 debut album My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely and its 2024 successor This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway.
She began composing songs at eleven and soon won an open-mike contest after devoting herself to refining her craft. Lola attended the BRIT School, the same institution previously attended by Amy Winehouse and Adele; shortly after leaving as a teenager she secured a contract with major-label Island. Her initial commercial outing, the November 2019 EP Intro, was crafted alongside producers LEX1K and Al Shux, Two Inch Punch, and Manuka, then followed months later by Renaissance, which added three further Manuka collaborations. A four-track EP recorded with Manuka and Paul Epworth, several extra singles, and her rendering of Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder’s 1985 hit “Together in Electric Dreams” for a John Lewis & Partners advertisement all lifted her visibility in 2021. Before the year closed she was also shortlisted for the 2020 BRITs Rising Star category. In 2022 she issued the singles “So Sorry” and “Stream of Consciousness,” which continued her work with Manuka and Epworth. Early 2023 brought her debut album My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely, on which she enlisted Cass Lowe and Jim-E-Stack to broaden the scope of her earlier releases. The candid and sharp-edged This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway surfaced the following year.
