Los Caliz, translating to "The Chalice," functions as a norteño sierreño ensemble headquartered in Sultana del Norte Monterrey, Nuevo León, and led by sibling singer-songwriters Carlos Mendoza on lead vocals and Sebastian Mendoza on second voice. Their approach diverges from standard sierreño conventions by expanding past the usual guitar-accordion-voice trio into quartet or occasionally quintet configurations that also feature guitarist/requintero Alex Barbosa and tuba player Fabian Breseno. After issuing their first single "Te Perdono" in 2019, the group began overlaying organic and occasionally synthetic percussion onto the folk foundations of their music. The year's other single, "¿Quién de Los Dos?," unsettled radio DJs even as it attracted millions of enthusiastic listeners through its use of bachata rhythms and electronic overdubs introduced in post-production. Subsequent work has fused banda and tropical pop textures into their romanticos and corridos while retaining balancing elements of rural norteño sierreño. Early 2020 brought "No Soy Como Tu," which earned international recognition for its synth-treated accordion and keyboards, drum loops, and samples.

The Mendoza brothers grew up in Urupan, Michoacan. Their father’s extensive record collection exposed them to traditional styles spanning norteño sierreño, mariachi, and everything between. He also recounted stories of their grandfather, an amateur musician who died when their father was ten and whom they never met, who carried his guitar everywhere; the elder Mendoza supplemented these accounts with recordings of the same traditional repertoire their grandfather had performed. After the family relocated to Sultana del Norte Monterrey in Nuevo León, the brothers began writing songs in their early teens. They encountered their first requinto guitarist, McAllen, Texas’ Alejandro Hernández, inside a music store; after talking and playing together, they invited him into the band. Weeks later they added local conguero Orlando Garza and tuba player Hugo Alberto Moreno. This initial lineup performed at local festivals and street parties while posting songs and videos on social media. Promoters soon booked them, just months after forming, to open shows for national artists including El Fantasma (Alexander García).

By mid-2019 the roster had changed: Hernández returned to Texas, the Mendoza brothers assumed percussion duties (with songwriter Carlos also adding tuba and second guitar), and Breseno replaced Moreno, who left for another band. Their debut single "Te Perdono," released on the Warner Bros.-distributed independent label Piedras de Lumbre, startled both fans and industry figures with its congas and bells while the melody stayed rooted in traditional sierreño. "¿Quién de Los Dos?" raised additional eyebrows by combining organic and programmed bachata rhythms, layered Auto-Tuned backing vocals, organic guitars, and upright bass beneath a classic folk melody. The track’s video surpassed 650 thousand views and the song appeared on streaming charts across platforms.

Los Caliz had already become a fixture on Mexican radio when they released the February video for "Los Fletes," a traditional narcocorrido recorded with Colmillo Norteno. Three weeks afterward they followed with the pop-flavored, bachata-tinged "No Soy Como Tu." Its video accumulated millions of views and moved the track onto streaming charts. Early July brought a collaboration with Pancho Uresti on his hit single "Aventé La Mochila," and three weeks later the group scored another hit narcocorrido with "El Maniaco." Written and orchestrated by 20-year-old Carlos, the track drew millions of views yet sparked debate among critics and listeners because of Sebastian’s age (18) and the graphic violence shown in its video. Preparing for their debut album, the band altered their sound again in October with "Me Prometí," a funky midtempo blend of percussive bachata and lushly romantic sierreño; the video surpassed a million views in its first month and placed the song on Mexican Regional streaming charts.
