The four cousins who make up Los Ninos de Sara joined forces with vocalist Ishtar to record as the lauded Alabína, whose sound fused Middle Eastern vocals with a pronounced flamenco gypsy pulse. The roots of Los Ninos de Sara predate Alabína’s rise, and the undertaking stems as much from shared family lineage as from shared musical pursuits. Guitarist and singer Tonio, guitarists Santi and Ramon, and percussionist Coco all grew up performing, each having taken up instruments in childhood. Tonio and Ramon turned professional at ten and six years old respectively, while Santi earned a degree from the Barcelona Academy of Music. Ahead of their work with Ishtar in Alabína, the quartet accompanied leading flamenco figures such as Manitas de Plata and Paco de Lucía. Their first album, Cubanita, appeared in France in 2001 with producer and collaborator Michael Sembello. Gipsyole! followed across Europe the next year and reached the United States in 2003 through the Intentcity label.
