Los Plebeyos emerged as trailblazers of the contemporary Mexican cumbia style under founder, lead vocalist, and songwriter Frederico Caballero Chavez, though the ensemble also embraced corridos and romanticos. Established in 1977 in Nuevo Leon, the group formed a vital component of a regional movement that encompassed Los Cadetes de Linares, La Verbena Popular, and El Gran Silence, each contributing to the integration of tropical and norteño approaches.

Frequent membership adjustments marked their three-decade run, yet Chavez’s compositions and performances remained the signature elements that distinguished the award-winning act. That continuity secured an uncommon long-term association with Fonovisia for all releases while sustaining tours between the mid-'80s and the late '90s. Compositions by Chavez were subsequently interpreted by numerous performers, several of whom scored successes with those versions.

Standout singles issued in the '80s comprised the couplings "Hola Que Tal" b/w "El Papucho Guayabita (Contestación Pipiripau)", "Vamonos al Baile" b/w "Carnavaleando", and "El Chin Chin" b/w "No Te Dejan". The 1986 albums Hola Que Tal and Diferente both reached the Top Ten of the Mexican Regional Albums chart, whereas 1994’s Regreso del Zancudo Loco, 1996’s Bailazo Tropical, and 2002’s Pachanga Tropical—registered at number 66 on Top Latin Albums—have long been regarded as essential entries in the tropical and cumbia repertoires. Los Plebeyos disbanded in 2004.
