Lucid 3 blend elements of folk, rock, and trip-hop in their distinctive style. The Auckland-based group came together in 1999, featuring Victoria Girling-Butcher as frontwoman handling vocals, guitars, and keys, alongside Marcus Lawson providing backing vocals, bass, and keys, with Derek Metivier contributing drums and loops. Establishing their independent label Lupin Music allowed them to put out their debut album Running Down the Keys during 2002. Two years afterward came their next self-released effort All Moments Leading to This, which climbed to the number two spot on New Zealand's independent music chart.

Turning to their 2007 album Dawn Planes, the trio consulted singer/songwriter Dave Dobbyn—famous for "Slice of Heaven," a track so prominently featured in New Zealand tourism promotions that it temporarily matched the national anthem in its association with the nation—regarding song arrangements. David Long, the composer behind music for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, took on production duties. EMI handled the release and also handled reissues of the band's prior albums.
