Ludwig Göransson

Ludwig Göransson, a Swedish composer residing in Los Angeles, has earned acclaim for his lively and frequently whimsical orchestral compositions in cinema and TV, securing an Oscar in the process. His achievements extend to Grammy victories in production and songwriting across rap, pop, and R&B styles, where he typically handles performance and recording duties himself except when orchestral forces are required. Initial prominent composing roles included the sitcoms Community from 2009 to 2015 and New Girl spanning 2011 to 2018. During the early phases of Community, he initiated a partnership with ensemble member Donald Glover for the latter's rap output under the Childish Gambino moniker. Multiple film critic groups honored his contributions to the 2015 boxing drama Creed, followed by an Academy Award win in 2019 for Best Original Score on Black Panther from 2018. In that identical year, Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year came his way for Childish Gambino's "This Is America," in addition to the Black Panther score. Emmys arrived in 2020 and 2021 tied to The Mandalorian, while Turning Red in 2022 incorporated his scoring efforts together with tracks from Billie Eilish and FINNEAS. Another Grammy and Oscar arrived in 2024 for the Oppenheimer score.

Born and raised in Linköping, Sweden, Göransson was introduced to music lessons early by his musician father. Primarily immersed in pop and rock during childhood, he expanded into jazz and classical during adolescence before completing studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He subsequently moved to Los Angeles, joined the Scoring for Motion Picture and Television program at the University of Southern California, and soon assisted film composer Theodore Shapiro (Old School, Tropic Thunder, St. Vincent), whose comedic leanings aligned with his own.

Following initial assignments on short films and television, the composer secured his breakthrough in 2009 with the enduring sitcom Community, which opened doors to simultaneous scoring on New Girl and Happy Endings plus additional series. At the same time, Göransson launched an enduring collaboration with actor, writer, and musician Donald Glover, producing the 2010 Childish Gambino mixtape Culdesac and co-producing and co-writing the official debut album Camp that same year. While Community aired, further film work materialized on the 2013 comedy We're the Millers and the biopic Fruitvale Station. Childish Gambino's second album, Because the Internet, also appeared that year; Göransson co-wrote and produced it with Glover alongside guests such as Chance the Rapper, Azealia Banks, and Thundercat.

Around then, Göransson launched the solo Ludovin project and issued the 2013 indie pop EP How to Find a Party. He continued supporting other acts by producing two tracks on HAIM's Days Are Gone and crafting material for artists including Chance the Rapper and Pell. Community concluded in 2015, the same year his score for the well-received Rocky entry Creed drew notice. Over the ensuing years he contributed to John Legend's 2016 DARKNESS AND LIGHT, Moses Sumney's 2017 Aromanticism, and ZZ Ward's 2017 The Storm.

After Fruitvale Station and Creed, Göransson's third project with director (and former USC classmate) Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan was the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther. Its dynamic score reached number 64 on the Billboard 200, captured the Oscar, and earned the Grammy for Best Score. Additional 2019 Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year recognized his co-production and co-writing of Childish Gambino's "This Is America" with Donald Glover, marking the first rap track to receive Record of the Year.

In late 2019 Göransson entered the Star Wars realm by scoring the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, supplying a soundtrack companion for each of its eight episodes. He returned for season two, securing consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series. He also supplied the theme for the Mandalorian spinoff The Book of Boba Fett and contributed music to the films Tenet and Bad Trip. Another Disney assignment, the 2022 Pixar animated feature Turning Red, followed; its soundtrack, which blended three songs by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS for the fictional boy band 4*Town with Göransson's full score, charted on the Billboard 200. Further Disney commitments encompassed the Grammy-nominated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, while his work on 2023's Oppenheimer yielded a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media plus an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
