Malaa

Bass house forms the core of Malaa's output, typically delivered through stern tracks that also carry frequent humorous undertones. A balaclava keeps his face hidden, an approach that cultivates an aura of secrecy and prompts ongoing guesses about his real name. An early press biography offered one small clue by identifying him as Parisian. His membership in the Pardon My French collective alongside DJ Snake and Tchami has further encouraged conjecture, with various dance music publications suggesting that Malaa's releases actually represent combined work from those two DJs and producers. Since 2015 the artist has issued material at a rapid pace, encompassing Illegal Mixtape in 2017, Illegal Mixtape II in 2018, the album Don Malaa in 2022, plus dozens of EPs, solo and joint singles, and remixes. Standout commercial tracks include "Notorious," "Revolt," and "Made in France."

Fool's Gold Records issued Malaa's first single, "Pregnant," in 2015; Tchami's Confession imprint then supplied roughly a dozen further singles and EPs throughout 2016 and 2017. During that span the most widely received titles were "Notorious" and the Tchami collaboration "Prophecy," while remix assignments also began to accumulate, among them the official version of Skrillex and Diplo's Jack Ü recording "Mind." The two Illegal Mixtape projects appeared in 2017 and 2018, respectively, and that same year Malaa joined Tchami on the No Redemption Tour, which was supported by a same-titled compilation featuring exclusive remixes. In 2019 the high-energy singles "Revolt," featuring Jacknife, and "Criminals," featuring Rezz, were released, and Malaa, Tchami, and fellow Pardon My French member Mercer contributed to DJ Snake's "Made in France." Additional singles paved the way for the 2022 arrival of Malaa's debut full-length album, Don Malaa, which contained guest appearances from rappers Ghostface Killah, Fivio Foreign, and Jadakiss plus one track each assisted by DJ Snake and A-Trak.
