Martin Roscoe, a pianist noted for his broad range of skills, has built a strong reputation across Britain through enduring ties to multiple regional orchestras and frequent appearances at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts. He appears regularly as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician while maintaining a parallel career as an educator of distinction. His extensive discography features complete cycles of keyboard works by several late Romantic and modern composers, among them an album of George Lloyd’s piano concertos that originated in a 1984 radio broadcast yet reached commercial release only in 2024.

Roscoe entered the world on August 3, 1952, in the village of Halton, now absorbed into Runcorn near Manchester, England. A performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique at the Proms when he was seven years old ignited his determination to pursue music professionally. As a teenager he captured major British prizes, including the Davas Gold Medal in 1973, the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 1974, and first place in the British Liszt Piano Competition in 1976. He trained at the Royal Manchester College of Music with Marjorie Clementi, a descendant of composer Muzio Clementi, and with Gordon Green. After completing his studies, Roscoe earned a prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 1981, which opened the door to his professional career. His first recording, devoted to George Lloyd’s piano music, appeared in 1988.

Repeated engagements have linked him with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Solo appearances have also taken him before the BBC Philharmonic and the English Chamber Orchestra, and farther afield with the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra in concerts led by Simon Rattle, Christoph von Dohnányi, and other leading conductors. Recital tours have carried him throughout Britain and to the United States, Hong Kong, and Australia. Chamber music occupies a central place in his schedule, with notable partnerships alongside cellist Steven Isserlis and the Brodsky and Maggini string quartets. A long-standing duo-piano alliance with Peter Donohoe produced a successful album of George Gershwin’s music issued by Carlton Classics. Teaching appointments have included the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music, and he has directed both the Beverley Chamber Music Festival and the Ribble Valley International Piano Week.

More than three hundred radio broadcasts have made him a familiar presence on BBC airwaves, while his recorded output continues to grow. He joined violinist Peter Cropper for a complete set of Beethoven’s violin sonatas on ASV and has issued cycles of piano music by various late Romantic and modern composers. Releases have appeared on ASV, Chandos, and Hyperion; on the last of these labels, 2019 brought the fourth volume of his complete Ernö Dohnányi piano music series together with a recording of Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84, made with the Brodsky Quartet. In the pandemic year of 2020, violinist Jennifer Pike recorded sonatas by Elgar and Vaughan Williams with Roscoe at the keyboard. By the time his recording of the Lloyd piano concertos emerged on Lyrita in 2024, the catalog exceeded fifty items.
