Biography
Recognition arrived for pianist, conductor, and percussionist Peter Donohoe after he secured the silver medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition. An international career followed, one that regularly showcases demanding virtuoso works and encompasses leadership of several smaller ensembles alongside his activities as a recitalist and recording artist. His extensive discography features numerous releases devoted to British repertoire, and he has sustained a full schedule of performances well into his retirement years. Two albums appeared from him in 2024: one with the Sacconi Quartet devoted to the piano quintets of Taneyev and Robert Schumann, the other a solo collection of pieces by Albéniz and Granados.
Manchester, England, was the birthplace of Donohoe on June 18, 1953. While still fourteen he entered Chetham's School of Music, where instructors encouraged him to apply to the Royal Manchester College of Music; he was admitted and worked there under Derek Wyndham. He later enrolled at the University of Leeds for lessons with Alexander Goehr, yet soon returned to the Royal Manchester College of Music, completing degrees in both piano and percussion in 1976. During that period he performed on percussion in Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps under the direction of a teenage Simon Rattle and also played with several British orchestras plus assorted rock groups. Ultimately he chose to concentrate on the keyboard, pursuing additional instruction from Yvonne Loriod, Olivier Messiaen, and Charles Rosen, among others. After entering multiple competitions he claimed the silver medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, an achievement that established a lasting connection with audiences throughout Russia.
London engagements at the Purcell Room and at the Last Night of the Proms in 1979 marked Donohoe's initial British appearances. His first commercial recording, issued by EMI Classics in 1987, presented Prokofiev piano sonatas. Subsequent seasons brought collaborations with leading orchestras across Britain and Ireland as well as seventeen consecutive seasons at the BBC Proms. In 2002 he served as pianist for Simon Rattle's inaugural concert with the Berlin Philharmonic. A parallel conducting career developed, including leadership posts with the Northern Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Mill, and the Bath Philharmonia. The honor of Commander of the Order of the British Empire was conferred on him in 2010.
The breadth of Donohoe's recorded output remains exceptional. After his early EMI Classics projects he released discs on Hyperion, Chandos, and Warner Classics; during the 2000s a sequence of British-music albums appeared on Naxos. The fourth installment of his Mozart piano-sonata cycle was issued by Signum Classics in 2021, after which he transferred the project to Somm. His 2024 release with the Sacconi Quartet belongs to an already substantial body of chamber-music recordings. When he moved to Chandos in 2024 for Granados's Goyescas together with Albéniz's Iberia, the total number of entries in his catalog had surpassed sixty.
