Biography
Matt Karmil crafts an eclectic range of abstract house productions that span bright, disco-tinged rhythms and more remote, languid pulses. Drawing strong inspiration from the sample-driven techniques of 1990s rap and trip-hop, his sound remains textured, blurred, and low-fidelity yet deeply entrancing. Singles issued on imprints such as Beats in Space and Aus Music function dependably on dancefloors, whereas longer works including the atmospheric 2018 album Will venture further into experimental territory.
Born in 1979 near Stonehenge, Karmil spent much of his childhood indoors after an Epstein-Barr virus diagnosis. As a teenager he picked up guitar and later immersed himself in big beat, instrumental hip-hop, drum'n'bass, and jungle. By his early twenties he was performing as a DJ in London. Connections made there with local producers and songwriters led to studio work alongside various pop artists. He later relocated to a Swedish forest to focus on solo material, subsequently spending time in Stockholm, Paris, and Berlin before settling in Cologne during 2012. Friendships formed with producers and DJs tied to the Kompakt label and shop encouraged him to share music he had previously kept private. His first EP, Reverse Peephole, appeared via International Records Recordings in 2013; PNN then released A Lot to Share and the single "So You Say" followed on Beats in Space, while the debut album ---- also came out on PNN that year.
After additional 2015 singles for Yumé, Studio Barnhus, and Endless Flight, two full-lengths surfaced in 2016. The second PNN album, ++++, emphasized hazy and crackling house cuts, whereas IDLE033 on Idle Hands leaned toward an off-center hip-hop beat collection. Smalltown Supersound put out the notably club-ready "Can't Find It (The House Sound)" in 2017. An extended take featured on the otherwise ambient-oriented 2018 album Will; that same year Studio Barnhus issued the more dancefloor-directed EP Tell Me Why and Aus Music released Sourced. The 2020 album STS371 presented a set of stripped-back yet driving house tracks.
