The Spanish indie pop group McEnroe came together in Vizcaya during 2002 under the influence of Talk Talk, Blue Nile, and the Smiths. Ricardo Lezón took on vocals and bass, Gonzalo Eizaga and Jaime Guzmán handled guitar duties, and Eduardo Guzmán played drums, with Pablo Isusi later joining on bass in 2008. Recognition arrived after early demos performed well in regional talent contests, prompting the band to issue their debut album El Sur de Mi Vida independently in 2003. Self-distributed EPs followed in relative isolation until 2007, when Subterfuge Records, the respected Spanish indie imprint, took notice. Enthusiastic notices from the specialized press greeted the expansive melancholy that defined their three Subterfuge albums—Mundo Marino (2008), Tú Nunca Morirás (2009), and Las Orillas (2012).
