Biography
Merche stands out as a top-selling pop singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist originating from Spain. She creates and performs nearly all of her own songs, drawing from an array of genres that range across pop, dance, R&B, and soft rock while frequently incorporating traditional Andalusian rhythms into her arrangements. Since 2001 she has remained a fixture of Iberian culture, beginning when she appeared under the name "Luna" to deliver the original track "No Me Pidas Más Amor" and finished sixth in the Spanish selection round for the yearly Eurovision Song Contest. The performance, together with the song’s inherent strength, secured her a contract on the Vale/Universal imprint. Following the 2002 arrival of her first album, Mi Sueño, six of her releases have earned gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status. Her singles and videos routinely reach the higher positions on both radio and digital rankings. After the 2017 album De Otra Manera she devoted nearly two years to extensive touring throughout Spain and Latin America.
Born Mercedes Trujillo Callealta in Cadiz, she received an early introduction to music from her father, the late Pedro Trujillo Ramos, a professional performer in Carnavales de Cadiz. At age six she was given a guitar, and throughout her school years she took part in plays as both actor and singer. After completing university studies she worked as a music teacher while continuing to develop her own material as a singer and songwriter. Recognition first came through her compositions for other artists before she achieved visibility as a performer. Following her Top Ten finish as "Luna" in the Spanish Eurovision trials, she signed with Vale under the name Merche. The song she had performed, "No Me Pidas Más Amor," was included on Mi Sueño, her 2002 debut album, which later received platinum certification after the track became a nationwide success and served as the theme for both Spain’s Big Brother broadcast and the long-running Andalusian series Arrayán.
Once touring concluded she returned to the studio and released Auténtica in 2004. The album, tracked in Stockholm and the Virgin Islands, attained platinum status on the strength of four charting singles, among them the socially conscious "Abre Tu Mente," written as an anthem of empowerment for survivors of domestic violence. Another single, the dance-oriented "Distancia," marked her first use of Andalusian rhythms. A special edition combining the platinum-certified album with a concert DVD was issued after the accompanying tour.
Her third album, Necesito Libertad, arrived in 2005. All ten tracks were original compositions recorded at Maxximusic Studios in Miami and produced by Marcello Azecedo, whose credits include Paulina Rubio and Marc Anthony. The lead single “Eras Tú” propelled the project to platinum within three months. During the subsequent 100-city Spanish tour she shared the stage with Soraya for a halftime performance at the Copa del Rey final inside Santiago Bernabeu stadium; the album ultimately reached double-platinum certification.
After a period away from the studio Merche worked with producer Carlos Jean in Cadiz and Madrid. The pair deliberately moved away from electronic textures toward a more acoustic pop sound. The resulting album, Cal y Arena, entered Spain’s Top 100 at number five upon its December 2007 release and received gold certification in its opening week. Following further successful tours across Spain, Latin America, and the United States it reached triple-platinum status.
In search of a fresh sonic direction, Merche traveled to Los Angeles to collaborate with producer Sebastian Krys, whose past work encompasses Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Alejandro Sanz. The 2010 release Acordes de Mi Diario, certified gold, blended rock, pop, and soul elements while employing urban and Andalusian rhythms. Its single "Si Te Marchas" debuted at number one and remained on the chart for 32 weeks, earning multiple Spanish awards and a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Album; she also performed at the ceremony.
The same production team reconvened in Miami and Los Angeles for the 2012 album Un Mundo de Colores. Fronted by the reflective single "Luna," which honored single mothers, the project secured another gold certification and stayed on Spain’s pop charts for 23 weeks while her sold-out tour visited venues across Spain and Latin America.
Merche subsequently moved to Sony and released Quiero Contarte, produced by Miguel Ángel Collado, whose résumé includes Pablo Alborán and Sergio Dalma. The album presented a wide spectrum of Spanish pop styles, from expansive ballads and cumbias to dance tracks, and reached number five on the charts. Streaming and airplay success led to gold certification. De Otra Manera followed in 2017, mixing romantic ballads, energetic dance songs, and folk-inflected melodies and rhythms. The singles "Pasajeros" and "Noche de San Juan," the latter featuring flamenco singer Pitingo, both entered the Top Ten, while the video for the third single "Te Lo Deserve" accumulated five million YouTube views. The album topped all digital platforms and peaked at number six on physical sales charts. Her tour began with a Madrid concert-hall appearance and continued through numerous dates in Spain and Latin America. In late September 2019 she initiated a social-media campaign around the single "Lo Que Me dé La Gana" to preview her 2020 full-length project.
