Hailing from Malaga in Spain’s Andalusian region—the very province where flamenco first emerged—singer Diana Navarro was raised in a home where music formed an everyday presence. During her formative years she sang extensively with a folk choir and started competing in vocal contests throughout the early 2000s. Eventually her demo recordings reached leading Andalusian musician Chico Valdiva, prompting work on her first album, No Te Olvides de Mí, which appeared in 2005. The project’s singular blend of flamenco, worldbeat, pop, and Northern African sounds quickly made her a favorite across her native country and brought a Latin Grammy nomination. Building on that debut’s momentum, Navarro moved past her flamenco foundation two years later with the album 24 Rosas, a set of classic Spanish love songs refreshed for modern listeners. She extended the same approach on 2008’s Camino Verde, drawing together songs first made famous by compatriots Rocío Jurado and Estrellita Castro. Those traditional pieces were reimagined in “nueva copla” arrangements tailored to today’s audiences. In 2011 she issued the live recording Flamenco, an album that returned to her stylistic origins and underscored the genre’s lasting impact on her own work. The set paid tribute to flamenco’s heritage by featuring compositions from revered figures including Pepe Pinto, Juanito Valderrama, and Enrique Morente.
