The Spanish pop/rock outfit Elefantes launched their stage presence on October 13, 1995, performing at Aspid in Barcelona to showcase a previously recorded six-track demo. Elefantes followed up in August 1996 with an EP issued on La Col Records and helmed by former Traditional Tourist member Cece Giannotti. Their track "¿Dónde Estoy?" soon appeared on a regional compilation album. The band took on production duties themselves for the 1998 release El Hombre Pez. Upon inking a deal with Hispavox, Enrique Bunbury—formerly of Heroes del Silencio—oversaw the creation of Azul, which included guest spots from Jaime Urrutia of Gabinete Caligari and Marilia, the singer from Ella Baila Sola.
