Biography
Mhysa serves as the musical identity for E. Jane, a multidisciplinary artist whose work as vocalist and producer encompasses atmospheric ballads alongside discordant experimental club tracks. Although the output nods to figures such as Donna Summer, Prince, Lauryn Hill, and Beyoncé, these pieces have aligned with forward-thinking imprints including NON, Halcyon Veil, and Hyperdub. The catalog features the widely acclaimed Fantasii from 2017 and Nevaeh from 2020.
E. Jane entered the world in Bethesda, Maryland, and first engaged with music during childhood through church and school performances. While completing academic milestones—a Bachelor of Arts at Marymount Manhattan College and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania—E. Jane launched the Mhysa project in 2015 via the NON release “Power Cuts,” a collaboration with Chino Amobi. The NON label followed this with the 2016 EP Hivemind, whose centerpiece reworks Sade’s “Jezebel” so thoroughly that only the lyrics remain recognizable. Rabit’s Halcyon Veil imprint then issued the full-length Fantasii in 2017, an album later cited among the year’s strongest by The Wire, The Quietus, and FACT. Early 2020 brought Nevaeh, a more ambient and intimate collection delivered through Hyperdub.
